Programme details Action Potential and Epilepsy

Biomedical Movie about brain activity

The Brain is constituted by one hundred billion of cells named neurons. Although there are others supporting cells in brain tissues, neurons are the key players of all cerebral processes allowing us to see, think, remind, dream, hear, play music or basketball, for instance.
In our brain there are as many neurons as the number of stars estimated to be present in the known universe.
Each neuron shares information with others 10 000 different neurons.
This information travels in a neurons network through chemical and electrical signals initiated by action potentials that propagate at speeds reaching 100 meters per second in some nerves. When this communication is somehow disturbed, illness like epilepsy may develop.
Nevertheless, these astronomical figures animate the foundations of our thoughts and emotions.
This Film has the Scientific Revision of the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience
