Programme summary
The return of the Belgians to the Antarctic several decades after the closure of the King Baudouin base is certainly an historical event. However, it is first and foremost, a formidable, human, scientific and technological adventure, across the most extreme continent on the planet? The building of a new permanent base, which is the future paradise for research, is a gigantic challenge, considering the various challenges faced by the planet.
Matière Grise’s main file of this Special Issue is a single document. It presents exclusive images and shots from many high-definition cameras, relating to the first steps on the route to the Princess Elizabeth Research Station, in the heart of the Antarctic, this winter. It also has a 3D virtual visit of what will be the most technologically advanced, the most modern and cleanest station on the white continent. The most impressive feature will be the complete absence of the emissions of pollution, while still permitting the most focused research into all disciplines of polar sciences. The Belare mission, managed by the explorer, Alain Hubert, had to face all of nature’s forces in order to commence with the construction of the base. Matière Grise had the honour of taking part in the expedition for no less than five weeks, in the magnificent and yet so dangerous vastness of the white continent…
