Subject Ocean acidification
Programme summary
The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen exponentially since the dawn of industrialization and currently, 25 million tonnes of CO2 dissolve into the seawater everyday. This has led to ocean acidification which if allowed to continue unchecked, will have a widespread impact on marine ecosystems affecting the growth, reproduction and survival of many marine species. Scientists wish to raise awareness of the problem amongst the general public and Europe’s leaders and to call for the commitment of everyone in taking decisive actions to decrease CO2 emissions.
