2. Apoptosis

I am Guido Kroemer and I coordinate a consortium made up of six different European countries. Our consortium addresses programmed cellular death, which technically is called 'apoptosis' in English and 'apoptose' in French.

3. The Project

Programmed cellular death occurs several million times per second in the entire body, simply to allow the renewal of organs and to remove damaged mutated cells from our body. This procedure is disrupted in certain pathologies, like AIDS, where there are too many apoptoses in the lymphocyte compartment and in cancers, where certain cells "forget" to die.

4. Applications

This fundamental knowledge has a great impact on bio-medical research.
We have discovered, in the case of AIDS, new clinically 'relevant' pathways of apoptosis and we have found new methods to overcome chemo-resistances by targeting mitochondria and proteins.

5. Partners

Guido Kroemer has developed the concept of mitochondrial cell death control in healthy cells, cancer and AIS. He coordinated the collaborative network.
Josef Penninger has performed genetic experiments showing that mitochondria control cell death.
Marja Jaattela has characterized the role of lysosomes and heat shock proteins in apoptosis.
Mauro Piacentini has elucidated clinically relevant cell death pathways in AIDS.
Boris Zhivotovsky has investigated the resistance of tumor cells against apoptosis.
Klaus-Michael Debatin has demonstrated the importance of mitochondrial apoptosis in human cancer.
